Description

Kindred Black Mercury's Token of Love Pendant w/24" Silver Necklace, believed to have been made during WWII. This is a 1940's era lucite and silver tone pendant with a profile of Mercury's head, taken from a silver dime during World War II. These were made by craftsmen who worked in machine shops, to give to their sweethearts when they left to serve overseas. Research on this item reveals that the chain to which the Mercury's head Pendant is attached is the traditional presentation. Another seller described this as "a sterling silver open work chain." However this chain does not have a stamp to show this. The chain has been broken in one spot and a repair made with what is clearly a base-metal ring. In addition the clasp and the two jump rings are not original. The replacement fixings are clearly a base metal. There are a couple of marks in the back of the pendant where the Mercury charm/token was attached. I am not sure what the link on the chain is; I would call it Etruscan Style, but I am not sure. The length of the chain is 24 inches, so the drop length when worn would be approximately 12 inches. The pendant itself is about 1 inch by 1 inch in size. It is very attractive and in excellent condition for its age.
